TOMMY BENSONS’ SKID

Delivered new by R J Lakin & Co in 1949, this must surely have been one of their finest and most elaborately decorated rides ever produced. Featuring some incredible artwork by chief designer Edwin Hall, it encompasses most of the popular motifs and styles of the period: including Pegasus and Mercury figures, winged wheels, some early “pyjama-stripe” lettering, and a magnificent front reminiscent of the pre-War Moonrockets.

“It’s Tommy Benson’s” proudly proclaims the front (or is it the back), not that there could be any mistaking it!

Above and below: three views of the Moonrocket-style front.

The paybox and top centres, featuring some wonderful winged wheel motifs.

One of the flights, featuring the Pegasus winged horse motif.

A handrail featuring Mercury, the winged messenger.

Above and right: three of the cars. Alternate cars feature the winged wheel or the Mercury motifs.
