Dingles Steam Village is just off the A30 between Okehampton and Launceston - look for the brown tourist signs. Opening times for 2005 are Monday to Thursday from 23 May - 29 September, 10.30 - 17.30 (last entry 16.00). Don't forget the FAIR ORGAN and OPEN WEEKEND 21-22 May and the FAIRGROUND WEEKEND 24-25 September, both with lots of extra attractions. For further information, call the Dingles hotline on 01566 783425 or e-mail richard@dinglesteam.co.uk

Continuing our look at Dingles 2005...

Also from a Switchback are these wonderfully carved boards by Orton & Spooner; believed to be from the set supplied in 1913 to Walter Murphy for his Savage-built steam switchback, and on loan to Dingles from Stephen Smith.

Entertaining visitors to Dingles again this season will be this 35 key Limonaire Fairground Organ. Believed to have been built around 1910, and travelled in France and Belgium with a Children's Ride, it remains in very original condition.
The large round stall seen left is used to house some of the many carved animals from the collection at Dingles. The stall was originally owned by Lings, and used for their "Chicken Joe" spinner game. There are examples of galloper mounts by Anderson, Lines, Orton & Spooner and Savage.
Also on display in the stall are these amazing models: the 1" scale model Spinning Top Gondola Switchback was built over a period of many years by the late Percy Tambling from Cornwall and is displayed with its associated transport and a model Dobby set, all on loan from Nigel Tambling and family (below left); the Overboats are believed to be the prototype of a ride never actually built by Savages of Kings Lynn, and are on loan from Mrs Joanna Braithwaite.

On display in their entirety for the first time are the complete set of panels from Hatwells' Gallopers (left and below). These wonderful items were acquired by the Fairground Heritage Trust some years ago with assistance from the National Art Collections Fund. The panels are believed to be by Tidmans of Norwich, with some superb artwork by the Whiting family of Norwich - believed to be the only surviving example of their work. The bottom centre shutters (left) were on loan last year to Pleasurelands, and are now displayed on a purpose made plinth, one of the many display items generously donated by Sheffield Galleries and Museums Trust to the FHT at the conclusion of the Pleasurelands exhibition.

This Orton & Spooner Bioscope Wagon, built around 1900 for Edwin Lawrence, has created a great deal of interest since its arrival at Dingles as part of the FHT collection. One of the carved swags was restored some years ago, and this has now been reattached to the wagon.
Another of the key items to have returned from the Pleasurelands tour is this pair of boards depicting Motorcyclists which originally formed the top boards to the front of John Powell's Orton & Spooner 1936 Super Speedway.
Featuring some beautiful carved work and lettering, believed to be by Orton & Spooner, this Cakewalk front was originally used by the Codona family.
Also returning to its original position following its return from the Pleasureland tour is this amazing painted canvas showfront banner. Depicting a "Wild Boy" or "Lion-faced Boy" from a 19th Century Freak Show, the banner was painted by A E & A V Smith of Camberwell, London.
Left: a view of one of the transport exhibits: Charles Heal's Scammell Chainrdrive tractor JHU632 "The Rocket".

Also on display in another building are the car truck and centre (below) from the legendary Rodeo Switchback. One of the "Tom Mix" cars has been assembled as a static exhibit. It is hoped that this ride will eventually form the centrepiece to a new Fairground Museum on the Dingles site.
